Once a tune is added to one of the decks, a visual representation of the track will appear below the main session view grid. You got to do it all manually and ahead of time by warping your tracks. That’s not to take away from the time DJ’s spend preparing sets in traditional set ups, but with Live, there is no beat matching in the typical sense. One of the biggest differences between Ableton Live and tradition DJ software is the amount of preparation you have to put into it. Here I will cover a few basic DJ techniques and how to apply them in Live, as well as provide a working template and set to get started mixing right away.
Better yet, Live allows you to essentially build and create a DJ template that directly suits your needs and allows room to evolve along with you and your skills. While Live has more in common with a traditional DAW than Traktor or Serato, its Session View can be used as a powerful and intuitive DJing environment.
Many DJ’s, beginner to experienced, who make the leap to software, will find programs such as Traktor and Serato to be great visual and audio reproductions of the technology that birthed DJing as we know it, and hidden away behind those waits Ableton Live. With new software and midi controllers hitting the market daily, it can be tough to keep up with technology, let alone finding a set up that suits your needs and abilities.
